PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS

The education provided by the School of Visual and Applied Arts is primarily in the form of studio art studies, supplemented by corresponding scientific, theoretical and pedagogical courses for the formation of artists with a comprehensive education and specialized artistic skills. In the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Aristotle University, the undergraduate programme of studies comprises ten semesters and leads to a unified diploma which specifies a Specialisation. There are three Specialisations: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking. There are five (5) Studios providing specialisation in Painting, one (1) for Sculpture, and one (1) for Printmaking.

When entering the School, students must choose a Specialisation and a Studio. In order to obtain their diploma, students must attend and be successfully examined in all Main Required Studio courses of their Specialisation, all Main Required Core courses, and a certain number of Required Elective courses, and present their Diploma Thesis, for a total of 300 ECTS. The art courses are Studio courses.

Although the number of studio courses in the programme of studies is smaller than the total number of theoretical courses, the studio courses account for about 65% of the total number of ECTS as compared to 15% for the theoretical courses and 20% for the Diploma Thesis.

In the 9th and 10th semester, the student in consultation with the Studio professor chooses the topic for his/her Diploma Project. The Diploma Project is the summit of the educational process and incorporates all of the artistic skills and knowledge that the student has acquired in the course of his/her studies. It has the form of an artistic research and production. Its object must be in accordance with the content of the required courses taught within the chosen Specialisation. The student must present his/her artistic work and be in a position to defend his/her diploma project before the committee appointed to examine the diploma projects.

Upon completion of their studies, students have acquired the specialised artistic skills and theoretical knowledge required for employment in the private or public sector as visual creative artists. In particular, they are qualified to work in all sectors of education, as part of research teams working in the area of Art and Culture, in local government on topics of Culture, in museums, theatres, archaeological services, advertisement, television, cinema, and other professional activities, within the regulations of the existing legal framework.

The School of Visual and Applied Arts issues the Pedagogic Proficiency Certificate.

COURSE CONTENT

The School of Fine and Applied Arts has a syllabus which explores various forms of contemporary practice. The central aim of the study of fine arts is to develop a critical understanding of visual culture through an exploration of specific sites in practice. The syllabus combines practical work with rigorous academic standards. Students are expected to read and practice widely. The lectures and seminars are supplemented by exciting group and individual projects.

Students are expected to visit art exhibitions all over the country and/or participate in group exhibitions. They are taught the concepts and practice of art as well as technical knowledge. Students engage in continuous critical dialogue, at both individual and group level, in which different points of view are brought to bear on personal work. Students and staff work together closely, but emphasis is placed on students’ contribution to their own learning. This is a truly wide-ranging fine arts course and a student’s work may be located anywhere on the whole spectrum of accepted artistic inquiry.

 

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is continuous, based on individual and group course work on relevant projects. It also involves examinations throughout the four-year course and a Diploma Thesis exhibition at the end of the course. The preparation and mounting of this exhibition is an integral part of the course and all students are required to take part in order to be assessed by all the academic staff to be awarded their degree.

 

THE COURSES

SUBJECTS

Students specializing in Painting are divided in five studios.
Students specializing in Engraving can enroll in a studio.
Students specializing in Sculpture are divided in one studio.

The possibility of changing studios exists up to three times during the undergraduate studies, that is at the beginning of the third, the fifth or the seventh semester.
First-year students must notify the secretary’s office which of the studios they wish to attend.
Students of the ninth and tenth semesters have no theoretical subjects, but have to submit a diploma thesis on their chosen specialization (Painting, Sculpture, or Engraving).
Students must be taught and tested in all subjects over ten semesters, and in each semester they receive a certain number of credits.
Students may study a number of optional subjects, as well as the compulsory ones, in order to make up their credits.

The Minister of Education and Lifelong Learning

 

Taking into consideration:

1. The regulations mentioned in the third subparagraph of the third paragraph of the article 2 by Law 2525/1997 (GG 188 − Α), as replaced by the second paragraph of article 1 by Law Ν.2909/2001 (GG 90 − Α).
2. The special nature of the subject matter of the above School.
3. The minutes of the General Assembly meeting, number 144/4−10−2010, of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh.
4. The regulations specified in article 90 of the “Code Law for the Government and the Governmental Bodies” as validated by article 1 of Presidential Act 63/2005 (GG 98 −Α), according to which it is certified that the regulations of this decision do not harm in a any way the National Budget, we decide the following:

Article 1
Right to Participation in the exams

The following have the right to participate in the exams for the admission in the School of Visual and Applied Arts, of the Faculty of Fine Arts,AUTh:

a) Senior High-school graduates or graduates of an equivalent high school here in Greece or abroad.
b) 8% of the specified number of admissions is taken up by Junior High-school graduates or graduates of an equivalent high school in Greece or abroad, provided they have a special artistic inclination, confirmed by the Admission Exams Committee of the School.

Article 2
Admission Exams Proclamation

  1. The exams for the admission in the School of Visual and Applied Arts, of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, are conducted on September.
  2. The admission exams are proclaimed by the Rector’s Council of the AUTh. The proclamation is published both on the notice board and online on the AUTh webpage and on the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh webpage. It should also be published in at least two (2) daily newspapers.

Article 3
Documentation, time and place of submission

  1. All the required documentation is submitted by the candidate himself/herself or by a legally authorized representative, to the Receiving and Control Agency, in the School’s Registrar’s Office, AUTh, from 25 to 31 August of each year. The required documents are the following:
    1. Application form
    2. School diploma
    3. Two (2) small photos of the candidate.
    4. The application forms of the candidates who are to be evaluated for their artistic inclination in order to be eligible to participate in the admission exams, should be submitted, along with their portfolios to the Receiving and Control Agency, at the School’s Registrar’s Office, AUTh, from 1 to 10 June each year.
    5. The candidates can receive the exam application form from the Receiving and Control Agency during the documentation submission period.
    6. Upon submitting all the required documents, all the personal information of the candidates are verified based on their ID or their passport, that needs to be presented to the Secretary of the Admission Exams Committee of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh. In case the candidate does not have an ID or a passport, he/she must present a birth certificate with a certified photograph from his/her prefecture.
    7. Each candidate receives before the exams a “candidate ID”, which has a certified photograph, his/her personal information and is signed by the Secretary of the Admission Exams Committee of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh.

Article 4
Admission Exams Committee

  1. The Rector’s Council of the AUTh has decided, based on the proposal of the General Assembly of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, to appoint the Chairman, Vice chairman, the full members and the alternates, as well as the Secretary of the Admission Exams Committee. The exams are conducted by the Admission Exams Committee which consists of five (5) Faculty Artists Members of the School of Visual and Applied Arts, of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh.
  2. A Faculty member cannot participate in the Admission Exams Committee if he/she has a spouse or any other relative, by blood or marriage, up to the third degree of kinship, who is a candidate in the admission exams. All members of the committee are to submit a statutory declaration to the Chairman of the Committee.
  3. If the Chairman is not present, for any reason, he/she is replaced by the Vice chairman, and he/she, in turn, is replaced by the oldest Faculty member in the Committee.
  4. The time table and duration of the exams, as well as the compulsory and optional tests for the candidates, are specified by the Admission Exams Committee and are published at least twenty (20) days before the exam set date, both on the notice board and on the webpage of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Auth. The announcement may also be published on daily newspapers.
  5. The Secretary of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, is also the secretary of the Admission Exams Committee. In case of absence or inability to attend, another administrative clerk will take on this duty according to the Rector’s Council, AUTh decision.
  6. The quorum of the Committee is defined as having more members present than absent.
  7. The Admission Exams Committee is generally responsible for the exams conduct, and also sets up the Supervisory Committee which, as defined in article 6 of this Ministerial Decision, appoints the remaining bodies and committees, provides all the required guidelines, grades, as well as composes and approves of the scoreboard of the candidates.
  8. The Admission Exams Committee makes the final decision for every detail that might come up during the implementation of this Ministerial Decision.

 

Article 5
Admission Exams

  1. In order to get admitted to the 1st year of studies in the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, the candidates have to carry out visual works from various templates, either live or inanimate, or both. The templates required are at least two (2).
  2. The Admission Exams Committee is the one responsible to select and place the templates in the examination rooms. For each test, the candidate freely chooses one or more of the templates, except for the tests that have been deemed compulsory by the Admission Exams Commission, in accordance with the previous article.
  3. The works carried out by the candidates are:

a. Drawings on paper with pencil, coal or ink.

b. Colored paintings on paperboard with gouache, watercolors, acrylics and pastels.

  1. The papers and paperboards are supplied by the Admission Exams Committee, whereas all the other materials are to be provided by the candidates.
  2. On the final day of the exams, the candidates are to present to the Receiving Agency the works they have selected to hand in.

a) One to two (1-2) freehand drawing works of the clay model submitted by the candidate on the 1st and 2nd day of the examinations
b) One to two (1-2) colored paintings based on the natural colour-composition submitted by the candidate on the 3rd day of the examinations works
c) One specific topic test, chosen at random by the committee on the date and time of the exams, and announced by the Admission Exams Committee. This test may be approached freely (drawing or color) by the candidates; Candidates are to hand in one (1) work from the ones completed during the 4th day of the exams.
d) One free topic test, chosen by each candidate and approached freely (either drawing or color); the candidate is to hand in one (1) work from the ones completed during the 5th day of exams.

 

Article 6
Supervisory Committee

  1. The Committee responsible for the supervision of the candidates consists of the Supervisors, the Assistant Supervisors and the Proctors.
  2. The appointed Supervisors and Assistant Supervisors are members of the AUTh Administrative Personnel (Academic Education, Technological Education, Secondary Education) and their number is proportionate to the number of the candidates and the examination rooms.
  3. The appointed Proctors are members of: (a) the AUTh Administrative Personnel (Academic Education, Technological Education, Secondary Education), (b) the Special Technological Laboratory AUTh Personnel (ΕΤΕΠ), except for those who are graduates of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, and (c) the Special Teaching Fellows AUTh personnel, except for those who are graduates of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh.
  4. The number of the Proctors is proportionate to the number of the candidates and the examination rooms.
  5. The Supervisory Committee is responsible for the smooth conduct of the examinations, the inspection and the supervision of the examinees.

Article 7
Attendance and positioning of the candidates

  1. The examination rooms, along with the seating arrangement of the candidates in groups are being communicated to the interested parties at least three (3) days in advance, by posting the relevant announcement on the notice board of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh and on the website of the School.
  2. It is obligatory for all candidates to attend all examination days.
  3. The seats used by the candidates in the examination rooms are numbered and every seat corresponds to a candidate.
  4. During the first day of the examinations, candidates are positioned in a specific room and seat, according to the number of their candidate ID, which corresponds to the protocol number of the exam application form. Candidates are allowed to change seats while in the same room only if the rest of the candidates and the Supervisor or the Supervisor Assistant concur to this change.
  5. The verification of the attending candidates is carried out by crosschecking their IDs with their candidate id and the relevant list of the exam candidates.
  6. The candidate ID should be visibly placed throughout the examination.

 

Article 8
Examinations Conduct

  1. The necessary boards are provided to the candidates by the Proctors.
  2. The candidates are informed beforehand about the rest intervals between tests by the Admission Exams Committee.
  3. On the last day of the exams, the candidates hands in his selected works, as specified in Article 5 of this Ministerial Decision. Candidates hand in their works to the members of the receiving agency, who are to verify their personal information, by crosschecking their ID with their candidate ID and then formally receive the works. In the presence of the candidates, their works are to be inserted in an opaque envelop bearing their name, surname, father’s name, mother’s name, candidate ID number as well as the number of works. The above mentioned personal information are then covered with an opaque piece of paper, and the envelope is sealed and signed by the members of the committee.
  4. After the receiving agency has collected all the works, the Proctor of each room composes the minutes of the procedure, describing the conduct of the examinations, possible problems or disturbances and imposed penalties, according to Article 9 of this Ministerial Decision.

 

Article 9
Candidates’ Discipline

  1. Candidates are expected to behave decently and abide by what is specified and suggested by the Proctors and the Supervisory Committee.
  2. If candidates are found to help each other during the exams or to behave inappropriately towards the Proctors and the rest of the exam personnel and refuse to abide by their reprimands, thus disturbing the smooth conduct of the exams, they will be excluded from the exams by the Admission Exams Committee.
  3. The Admission Exams Committee instantly writes on the works of the excluded candidate, according the above, the reason for exclusion and the grade zero (0).

Article 10
Grading of the Works

  1. Each member of the Admission Exams Committee grades all works of each candidate with a whole number with a scale from 1 to 10, ten (10) being High Pass -Excellent and five (5) being Low Pass.
  2. After the end of the grading process and the estimation of the overall grades of all candidates, the Admission Exams Committee composes and approves of the grading list/scoreboard of all examinees.
  3. The overall grade of the candidates is comprised of the amount of all the grades accumulated from the members of the Admission Exams Committee, divided by its members.
  4. In order for a candidate to be eligible for admission, he/she needs to have accumulated an overall grade of five (5) or higher.
  5. The admission is done in order of descending grade and to the point when all specified positions are covered.
  6. The candidates that have accumulated an overall grade equal with the one of the last candidate to be admitted, are also admitted.
  7. Reviews, Re-evaluations or providing photocopies or photographs of the candidates’ works are not allowed, and their grading of the works lies on the objective and fair judgment of the members of the Admission Exams Committee.

Article 11
Results, Invitation for enrolment and enrolment

  1. The Scoreboard of the admission tests is posted on the notice board and website of Aristotle and the School of Visual and Applied Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh.
  2. The Admission Exams Committee may decide to display the works of successful candidates for three (3) days.
  3. The Rector's Council, AUTh submits to the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs within three (3) days of the issuance of the results, a names table of those admitted in the first year of the aforementioned department and publish it in at least two (2) daily newspapers, inviting successful candidates to come to the Department Registrar’s Office for registration, within ten (10) days from the day of publication.
  4. Enrolling in the School of Visual and Applied Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, requires the diploma of the school from which the applicant graduated. Once submitted, the original title may be withdrawn by filing relevant proof or a certified photocopy. During registration, the applicant submits a formal declaration under Article 8 of Law1599/1986 for non-enrollment in another department or faculty of higher education in Greece.
  5. Those unable to exercise their enrollment right within the time limit set for this year are eligible to apply for enrollment only during the next year and within the registration deadline set for that year.
  6. The works of unsuccessful candidates remain in the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, for six months from the issuance of the results and then are destroyed after composing the relevant act.

Article 12
Admission of Cypriots

  1. The Greeks of Cyprus, regardless of their nationality and place of residence or stay, are admitted in the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, and at 5% more of the designated number, following examinations carried out in Cyprus, in accordance with the provisions of this Ministerial Decision.
  2. For this purpose the General Assembly of the School of Visual and Applied Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, hold in June of every year an examination Commission comprised of three Greek artists graduates of the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts with their runner ups.
  3. A name list of successful candidates under the care of the Ministry of Education of the Republic is sent in September to the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, and shall also be communicated to the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs.

 

 

This decision shall be published in the Government Gazette.
